The one time I encountered a mountain lion on horseback, I thought, "That deer has such small ears... and such a long tail... and moves so strangely..." Not till I was back at the stable did I realize what I'd seen!
Regarding the mountain lion which you mistook for a deer- It's always fascinated me how we often see what we suspect to see and not what's really there. I'm glad the mountain lion left you (and your horse) alone.
