Used Cars in Delta, Colorado

We thought these were movie cars as we drove through town but they're at a specialty used car lot. Colorado has a lot of time warp towns-- Utah even more.

I played with cars a lot when I was little because my father loved the Packards of the 1930s and we went to many car meets. I know all sorts of things about cars from the 30's that would stop any conversation cold.

La Bamba Lately

I think Obama is doing an amazing job meeting problems of unthinkable magnitude with zest and flair. And I just love when Austan Goolsbee (above) is interviewed. Not only is he cuter than Parviz Musharraf, but his name is straight out of W.C. Fields. A brilliant interview with him here. A classic inspirational professor!

How about the millions of acres preserved as wilderness, signed into law? Go La Bamba.

How about throwing the bum out at GM? But wait, where's the stylist? The new guy, Fritz Henderson, looked like he was going to pick up a banjo at a pizza parlor in 1977 on tv last night. He was wearing a red and white striped shirt with a giant white collar and big blue tie. We were cracking up . But try as I might, I couldn't find man with shirt through google image. But I did come across this picture of yellow cars with snazzy rear ends! Soon the world will be looking like my cartoons!

3 cars, a menu, and a melting sneaker

First of all Happy New Year, and I really mean it this time!! (I meant it last year too but it may not have helped.)

I consider January 1 the start of heave ho season, so I hit a certain closet and came upon family drawings of cars, from different decades.

The car above appeared in a dream that my brother in law, (Carol's first husband), had about me. He drew this after the dream. He said it was a beautiful one seater roadster.

About ten years later his son drew this picture, which fell out of a magic poster book. His father and Carol separated when John was a baby, so there was no connection at all between father and son. But aren't the cars similar?

And here's a drawing my father did-- when he was at Harvard Business School in 1936. He loved classic cars.

It was on the back of this menu. He worked as a waiter while he was a student there. Those boys were fed pretty well at the end of the depression! Tango dressing: sounds tasty!

This is a cel from a shoe commercial I did around 1972 for Connie Shoes, "under $20." All those rapidograph dots. yikes. It fell out of the same magic posters book. (Stay tuned tomorrow for pictures of my inner brat.)

Viktor Schreckengost, 101;

A great designer whose name you may not know died at age 101. I'd never heard of him before, but I recognized many of his designs.

I thought this teapot was thrilling to see. Although I have to tell you, when I came back to check this post I thought it looked like a fancy toilet for squirrels.

The obituary linked to above contains more amazing images of his work.

And still more are here. Be sure to view all the pedal cars. Now these are nice small cars with better design than the smart car.

A Beautiful Car

This is a 1936 Delahaye 135. I think I saw one at the Petersen Museum once. Isn't it exquisite?

And Namowal, for ultimate cartoon cars, look at this current Petersen exhibit. Maybe we should meet there!
