The Pamplemousse is off the trail

I just learned The Pamplemousse will not be a part of the Kentucky Derby this year. They discovered heat in a tendon yesterday before his big race at Santa Anita. He'll be laid up for a while. I've been feeling so sad and disoriented since. I didn't realize how much emotion I'd attached to this horse.

My condolences! =( Your excitement was palpable...what a bummer. I hope he recovers quickly.

How disappointing! I knew he missed Saturday's race but I didn't know they were keeping him out of the derby. I wonder if he can sense everyone's regret that they aren't sending him to the big race this year.

Sally, what's the deal about synthetic tracks and soft tissue injuries? Is it comparable to the difference between jogging on concrete and jogging on a dirt path (for a human)?

I'm really disappointed too.

Formerly tracks were all dirt. In order to minimize injuries, all the tracks on the West Coast (I think) have switched to a synthetic surface, which is a kind of chipped rubber-- at least that's what it smells like. At Del Mar and Hollywood Park it's been succesful, but they've had lots of problems at Santa Anita, and trainers have pointed to the soft tissue injuries.

Thanks for sharing my concern for the poor guy and all the people who thought fame and fortune were right there in front of them.
