Not a Prairie Dog

This is not a prairie dog. This is a baby marmot, one more in the dynasty that has survived for at least the last thirty years in a rock pile right by the side of our main road.

The amazing thing is that these marmots wait until you're almost upon them and then run to the other side of the road and jump in a hole. Then they stick their heads back out of the hole as if to say, "Where are you off to?"

So I'm telling them here.

We're off on a three stop adventure: first the dump, then the hot springs, then this very nice restaurant at the Hotel Beaumont in Ouray. It's a combo Father's Day and Birthday dinner. The only thing I'm sure I'm ordering on that menu is the Raspberry Baked Alaska, or maybe I should order the whole meal off that dessert menu!

I'll have the GRILLED WILD KING SALMON FILLET with Dill Buerre Blanc & Served with Sweet Potato & Yukon Gold Hash with a 2nd potato side dish Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes and CHOCOLATE SILK TARTLET Topped with Fresh Blackberries & champagne (not in a can).

And the CAESAR SALAD Hearts of Romaine Tossed with House Caesar Dressing, Grana Padano Cheese & Croutons because I'm on a diet.

Whatever you do, don't order the BROWN SUGAR GLAZED FINGER BANANAS.

It was an AWFUL DINNER! WOW! An entirely new menu and new chef whose credentials were "he's cooked for the Telluride Film Festival." (which means he can make popcorn.)

All the entries read like Trader Joe's specials, precooked, almost worth eating.

We ordered the special of fried calamari as a starter and it came to the table cold. We were the only people in the restaurant. How does fried food come out cold when it's a special and you're the only two specials in the restaurant?

We actually sent it back- we never send things back. Half an hour later as we waited for the pecan encrusted puke elk, a couple showed up and sent back the bottle of wine.

NO DESSERT!! All they had was vanilla ice cream rolled in coconut which we all know is a desperation dessert when you have nothing.

Major bummer, although we had a jolly time laughing at the sad weirdness of the place.

Heading for the big shopping in Montrose in the morning, and you better believe I'm going to buy the biggest gooiest doughnut in the case.

Disappointing about the restaurant. Nothing like eagerly anticipating something (especially something you've enjoyed before!) and being let down.

"...whose credentials were "he's cooked for the Telluride Film Festival." (which means he can make popcorn.)"
That made me laugh.
"Half an hour later as we waited for the pecan encrusted puke elk"
That too.

A so-bad-it's-really-unbelievable restaurant might make for a funny cartoon...!

what a disappointment! So often I find that if I eat something wonderful somewhere, or find a fabulous bargain outfit somewhere, never again when I return is it as good.... so many things must go into creating that one great moment.

The link in your post takes you to a great menu that warns at the bottom: "The above is a sample menu. The Chef changes the menu seasonally."

It looks like Chef changed the menu. Drastically.

We'd never been there before and will certainly never go again-- if it stays open.
