Dark Days

My mother fell and broke her hip two nights ago. She was going to have surgery today, but the cardiologist has some concerns and they're doing more tests. She's almost 95. When I spoke to her last night in her hospital room she was quite lucid about the surgery and not particularly bothered, but all agitated about the labor problems in the basement, convinced that she needed to take a stand on things. She doesn't take well to anesthesia.

My 17 year old niece is also in the hospital, in Chicago with a horrible disease. We are pretty stressed around here.

I drew this in my sketchbook a while back. Right now I'm playing with Flash a bit, and can't help noticing how much better the line quality is with an actual pen as compared to any kind of software.

How are you doing? News about your mother yet? Thinking of you. Love, Jane

Hi Jane, My mother sounded stressed but cogent this evening. Because they are doing a day to day delay on her surgery they aren't feeding her, and since the only thing there is to do in a hospital bed is wait for your meal it's stressful.

I'm so sorry about all the sickness, the shattered hipness and stress. Your house sounds a bit like ours, only ... oddly, we're skipping the stress and getting crazy ass prayers in action. (No easy thing to do when you're an agnostic, but I'm totally down with calling on whatever's out there to bring some healing and love to bear.)

Thinking of you. I am struggling with the same line quality issues and am finding if I draw first and then scan in and augment in Photoshop or something, it's kind of interesting.

thanks booda baby and stray. woke up at 3 and got up at 7, ugh. We replace my windows in the little studio with the darkest tinted glass you can get. It's wondrous. Before I had to tack a tablecloth over the east facing window to see at the desk, but this morning, even with full sun shining in, I can see my computer screen just fine. It tints the view amber, pretty in itself.

Sorry to hear that your mom broke her hip and that your niece is sick. How awful. Why do bad things come in clumps?
I agree that computer tablets can't match the line quality of pen and paper. I've had my tablet P.C. for over two years and I'm still getting used to it.
Nice drawing, by the way.

I hope they are both improving.

Oh Sally. This is too much. Let us know how things go with your mom and niece.

What are you doing in Flash? You mentioned it the other day.

p.s. The two characters in your sketch look vaguely familiar.

I still have an old painting of Linda's over one window; I have to move it as the light changes during the day.

Thanks everybody. My mother had her surgery yesterday and may get released tomorrow. I haven't spoken to her yet but report was it all worked. Wish they could have popped a new knee in at the same time.

Good news about your mom's coming through the surgery ok. The knee can wait. What a relief. Will you go there anytime soon? Thinking of you.
