Heading Out

I'm going to visit my mother Monday-Friday. She's been failing ever since her hip surgery. Although physically she's recovering, her mind got jammed I guess from the anesthesia. She's living in an alternate world- I can't imagine what this visit will be like. Or rather, I think I can...

Rooster Elle has been improving after a week on his meds. With birds you never know what the health outcome will be because they hide symptoms, but I had him back with the girls today in the sunshine and all were getting along and hanging together. Chickens can really turn on a sick bird, so I guess they were putting a vote in for the guy. I certainly am.

I was told Ira Glass did a radio show on chickens this weekend. Anyone hear it? And the New Yorker ran an article on raising them a month or so ago. Odd.

My new phone has all kinds of features so who knows, maybe I'll post next week.

Hope you have a happy and safe holiday, and whoever is cooking doesn't decide to experiment too much on Thanksgiving.

Sorry to hear about your mother's troubles. It has to be unnerving for the both of you. I'm sure she'll appreciate your company.

Namowal, I know you've been through these intricate mental mom things. "We must get together when you're here. Are you staying in the attic?"

THIS is the beauty of the internet, isn't it? You can access podcasts and videos and great articles on chickens AND the same on being a child (no matter what our age) of aging parents. There was a documentary (maybe a series)that I ran across last year - it was beautiful and real.

We're really all in this together.

Sorry to hear about your mother. Hope your trip has some positive moments of connection. I used to free associate to try to guess what my dad might be trying to communicate (while perhaps just choosing the wrong words sometimes?).

Sally, I'm SURE your trip will have positive moments of connection. Even though your mom's mind isn't clear, your presence will be a big comfort. But you know all that. We're thinking about you this week and hope you post from your phone! Try, just as an experiment and let's see what happens.

Hi Sally,
I'm familiar with the "Are you staying in the attic?" stuff. Sometimes I can guess what she really means out of context.
One more thing-
I was listening to a RadioLab podcast about how memory works and it featured one guy who had a brain injury that included serious memory problems- and he couldn't make new memories at all. Sometimes he couldn't even remember his wife's name. But he did remember that he loved her dearly. The experts theorized that the part of the brain that stores love (I'm oversimplifying a bit) is tucked away and a safer place than the part that stores names, events and details.

Wow I can post from phone. My mother is pretty lucid today which is great! Last nite she told a wild story about going on a field trip to see the indians in the woods. She said that many on the trip were elderly and scared to leave the bus.
